The tale of the making of the transporter is one of dignity, zeal, and common sense. Before World War I, Mercedes Benz has been locked in fierce competition with the German racing teams. However, when Mercedes cam out with the V12 driven W-154, it won 12 of the 17 events up to the war, and staked the number one slot. It was not until 1954 that Mercedes actually returned to Grand Prix racing, with a decision taken by the management in 1952.

Mercedes Benz withdrew from racing following the tragic events of the 1955 French 24 Hours of Le Mans endurance race after a privately entered Mercedes Benz 300 SLR crashed, killing 80 people. The transporter, and the remainder of the racing division as well, was dismantled that year.

 

The vehicle turned out to be so heavy that the company even gave up the idea of keeping it and its payload in its museum, because the floors would have given way. After the demise of the carrier, Mercedes Benz got so many requests that it had to opt to build a replica in 1993. With the help of an outside fabricator, and a handful of sketches and photographs, the vehicle was finally unveiled in 2000. A short, albeit magnificent, page in the history of Mercedes Benz racing had been restored for the amazement and wonder of all its fans.
