what would be easier to become in the military a jet pilot or an apache helicopter pilot?

I know that both are very difficult to achieve, im just wandering which is easier. Also when i was 16 i had a misdemeanor drug charge for possession of weed, it is now expunged off my record but i know the military can have access to anything if they want to, how difficult will this make it to achieve my dream.

To fly jets for Air Force, Navy, Marines you must have a 4 year college degree to even apply.

The US Army Warrant Officer Flight Program is open to high school graduates with no college requirement. This is a highly competitive program and not everyone who applies is selected. In fact many are boarded and classified FQNS Fully Qualified Not Selected.

I know several Army Aviators who applied several times and it took some of them 3 to 5 years before they made it in.

You can also enlist as a regular soldier and apply for flight school from within the ranks but the opportunities are really no better. You can get more information here:

Once you are in Army Aviation Flight School airframe assignments are often decided by class standing. The higher your class standing the greater your choices.

(If I were a young guy doing it all again and although the Apache is a good aircraft I would choose the Kiowa Warrior Program or the ARH (now that the Commanche is dead)).

Looking to the future once you are an Army Aviator you will fly helicopters for 5 to 9 years before you meet the eligibility for fixed wing aircraft. The Army operates a rather large fleet of fixed wing aircraft in the Military Intelligence field and as people haulers (sorry, no fighters).

If you are really good, a select number of Army Aviators are chosen to attend the Navy Test Pilot Course and yes, they do fly fighters. In fact, a couple years ago the Commander of the Navy Test Pilot School at Pax River, Va was an Army Aviator.

Also, Army Aviators have been selected as Mission Specialists by NASA for the Space Shuttle Program.
